Sandy started drawing from the moment she could hold a pencil. Born in a restless Yugoslavia, into a family of architects and artists, drawing came naturally and was not considered a special talent. At a very young age, her family emigrated to South Africa where she found herself in an unfamiliar world of diverse cultures and people. Being unable to communicate due to the language barrier, she began drawing as a way to express herself and quickly became aware that drawing did not come naturally to everyone.

Sandy’s artistic talents flourished and in a natural progression, she went on to study architecture to follow in the family business. Eventually, her love of animation and freedom of expression overshadowed her architectural career and she continued to pursue her passion in animation and design, and later worked under the renowned Disney and Barney brands. Her versatile and creative journey spans across many mediums in art, including ceramics, glass and more recently, digital art but it’s her explosive use of bright and happy colours that is her signature style.
She has exhibited in many prestigious galleries in and around the Cape and in Croatia.

Being disillusioned by the rapid destruction and abuse of our planet has impacted her having a clear awareness for the desperate need to once again restore peace and harmony and create a happy place in people’s lives. Her art brings us to a place of childhood purity, reminding us of the innocent bliss of youth. Her characters are impetus for a smile rather than salacious humor that speaks to the conflicting agenda of the ego and identity. Her unique style of work may be utopian, but it is not naïve. Ever hopeful, she sees beyond the world that is today and believes that light has the power to overcome darkness.

Being a self-taught artist, she continues to explore and find inspiration and solace in other light-hearted creatives, the beauty of her natural surroundings, the study of animal behaviour and most importantly, the wonders of nature. She is a member of SASA (South African Society of Artists) and is currently serving on the council to help promote and uplift local artists in their quest to make a positive difference in people’s lives.
